Meteorites in Africa.





Meteorites have been found in many countries in Africa. Some of the most notable locations include:


1. Egypt: The first meteorite ever recorded was found in Egypt in 1911. Known as the Gebel Kamil meteorite, it is estimated to be around 5,000 years old.


2. Morocco: This country is known for its large number of meteorite finds, with over 100 recorded falls. The most famous is the Tissint meteorite, which fell in 2011 and is believed to be around 4.5 billion years old.


3. Algeria: The largest meteorite ever found in Africa, the Tamentit meteorite, was discovered in Algeria in 1864. It weighs over 500 kilograms and is estimated to be around 4.5 billion years old.


4. Libya: The Libyan Desert is a popular location for meteorite hunters, with many finds reported over the years. One of the most famous is the NWA 869 meteorite, which was found in 2000 and is believed to be around 4.5 billion years old.


5. South Africa: The Kalahari Desert in South Africa is another popular location for meteorite finds. The most famous is the Hoba meteorite, which is the largest single piece of iron ever found on Earth, weighing over 60 tons.


6. Namibia: The Gibeon meteorite, found in Namibia in 1836, is one of the most famous meteorites in the world. It is estimated to be around 4 billion years old and is composed of iron and nickel.


7. Sudan: The Kaidun meteorite, found in Sudan in 2000, is believed to be around 4.5 billion years old and is composed of carbonaceous chondrite, making it a valuable specimen for scientific research.


8. Ghana: The NWA 11789 meteorite, found in Ghana in 2016, is a rare type of meteorite known as a lunar meteorite. It is believed to have originated from the Moon and is estimated to be around 4.5 billion years old.


9. Tanzania: The Mbozi meteorite, found in Tanzania in 1930, is a large iron meteorite that is estimated to be around 3 billion years old. It is also known as the "African Iron Pillar" due to its resemblance to the famous Iron Pillar of Delhi in India.


10. Kenya: The Chergach meteorite, found in Kenya in 2007, is a rare type of meteorite known as a Martian meteorite. It is believed to have originated from Mars and is estimated to be around 4.5 billion years old.
